Organisation
The Swedish Security Service employs around 1,500 people, most of whom are based in Stockholm. There are also regional offices located in Umeå, Uppsala, Örebro, Linköping, Gothenburg and Malmoe.
Around half of our staff have police training, and work as close protection officers, investigators and surveillance officers. Many other professions are also represented, such as analysts, technicians, translators, economists, legal advisers, interpreters and administrators.
The Head of the Swedish Security Service is Charlotte von Essen and Magnus Krumlinde is the Deputy Head of the Swedish Security Service.
Documents governing our activities
The Swedish Security Service is a Government agency, which means that our activities are governed by the instructions, the letter of appropriations and the allocations we receive from the Government.
We are also obliged to give the Government an account of our activities in the form of an annual report. In addition to this, and as required by the regulations applicable to government agencies, we submit an annual budget estimate to the Government. Each year, we also set out an activity plan for the Service.
What distinguishes the Swedish Security Service from other Government agencies is that most of the governing, planning and reporting documents are classified, on the grounds of national security. Among those mentioned above, the only public documents are instructions and the part of the letter of appropriations presenting the allocations.
