Prosecution for preparation to commit a terrorist offence

Published 6 November 2025

A man is being prosecuted for preparation to commit a terrorist offence and attempted murder. He is, among other things, suspected of having planned an attack against an event in Stockholm.

In February this year, the prosecuted man was apprehended in the Stockholm area by the Swedish Security Service. At that time, the man had been under surveillance by the Swedish Security Service for a period of time.

– We intervened at a stage where we believed that the planing of the attack had turned into more concrete preparations. This is an extensive operation that the Swedish Security Service has worked with for a relatively long time; first as an intelligence matter and later within the framework of a criminal investigation, says Christoffer Wedelin, Deputy Head of Operations at the Swedish Security Service.

According to the criminal investigation, the suspect has consumed a large amount of violent Islamist propaganda. He has reportedly also sworn allegiance to the terrorist organisation the Islamic State.

– We often witness young individuals being radicalised in various kinds of violent contexts online. These young individuals consume large quantities of propaganda and material showing gross violence, which speeds up the radicalisation process, says Christoffer Wedelin.

In addition to preparation to commit a terrorist offence, the man is also charged with attempted murder, preparation to commit an offence against the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods (gross offence), participation in a terrorist organisation (gross offence), and training for terrorism (gross offence).

– In several ways, this case illustrates the threat posed by lone perpetrators that the Swedish Security Service has highlighted for a while now, says Christoffer Wedelin.
The case also includes another individual who has been charged with attempted murder and participation in a terrorist organisation (gross offence).

The trial in the Stockholm City Court begins on Tuesday, 11 November 2025.
